Vanessa Wood, founder of The First-Year Classroom

About Vanessa Wood

Welcome! I'm Vanessa Wood, an educator, instructional coach, and teacher mentor with more than two decades of experience supporting teachers and students across elementary, middle, and high school settings.

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of serving as a classroom teacher, innovative learning coach, instructional coach, and educational leader. I've worked alongside hundreds of educators to strengthen instruction, build classroom communities, increase student engagement, and navigate the everyday challenges of teaching.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's this:

Great teachers aren't born—they're developed through support, reflection, practice, and encouragement.

Why I Created This Course

I created this course because I remember how overwhelming the first year of teaching can feel.

Between lesson planning, classroom management, parent communication, grading, meetings, and simply figuring out how everything works, new teachers are often expected to learn an entirely new profession while doing it in real time.

Too many talented educators leave the profession because they feel unsupported, exhausted, or unsure of where to turn for practical guidance.

My goal is to change that.

This course provides the tools, strategies, and confidence-building support that every new teacher deserves. Whether you're teaching kindergarten, middle school science, or high school English, the foundational principles shared in this course will help you create a classroom where both you and your students can succeed.

What Makes This Course Different

This isn't a collection of educational theories or unrealistic classroom advice.

Everything you'll learn comes from real classrooms, real teachers, and real coaching conversations.

Inside this course, you'll discover practical strategies for:

  • Establishing classroom routines and expectations
  • Managing student behavior effectively
  • Planning engaging lessons
  • Building positive relationships with students and families
  • Staying organized and managing your workload

  • Developing a sustainable teaching practice that prevents burnout

My Promise to You

My mission is simple:

To help you become the confident, effective, and impactful educator your students need while maintaining your passion for teaching.

You don't have to figure everything out on your own.

Think of this course as having an experienced coach in your corner—someone who understands the challenges, celebrates the wins, and provides practical guidance every step of the way.

I'm honored to be part of your teaching journey and excited to help you build a strong foundation for a successful and rewarding career in education.

Welcome to the community. Let's grow together.
